The legal profession in New Zealand is s<\/span>ubject to strict<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> regulat<\/span>ions<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, so a lawyer has to maintain a current practising certificate issued by the New Zealand Law Society. They must also complete many legal training modules throughout their career before they can assist clients without supervision. In New Zealand, a lawyer <\/span>is generally<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> admitted as a barrister <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> solicitor, meaning that they can practice as both.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div  class=\"box box--icon box--star\">\n    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Zealand Law Society requires lawyers to renew their practising certificates every year. To maintain a practising certificate, a lawyer must undertake at least 10 hours of professional development. This regulation ensures lawyers are up to date with developing or amended legislation and new case law within New Zealand. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is a Solicitor?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You may know a solicitor (or barrister) as your lawyer. Y<\/span>our solicitor <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is typically your first point of contact when you are seeking legal advice. They work in a private practice, as a sole practitioner, in a regional firm, or, sometimes, in-house for companies or government. A solicitor will have varied, more generalised expertise and can assist with various matters within their area.
