They play a similar role to employment lawyers, but employment advocates are not lawyers. There is no qualification to become an employment advocate. Employment law in New Zealand is clear that both employees and employers can be represented by \u2018any person\u2019, not just lawyers. This has opened the door to a group of professional representatives, who usually specialise in representing employees, and market themselves as being cheaper than employment lawyers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Employment advocates can represent employees at many different points during the employment process, including for employment problems such as a personal grievance. Additionally, an employee does have the right to choose whoever they like as their representative in a process. For that reason, you may see employment advocates at <a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.nz\/employment\/how-should-a-disciplinary-investigation-be-conducted\/\">disciplinary meetings, poor performance reviews<\/a> and mediations. Even if the employment advocate has some legal training, a law degree or experience in a law firm, that does not necessarily make them employment lawyers.
