Copyright is a fundamental IP right that allows creators of original works to have exclusive control over how those works can be:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">used;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">published;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reproduced;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">transferred; and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sold.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This article will look at the basics of copyright protection in New Zealand, including:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what copyright <\/span>covers<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how long it lasts<\/span>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how you can use copyright material; and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what options you may have if you believe someone is infringing on your copyright.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What Types of Work Does Copyright Cover?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Copyright protects original artistic works that have a fixed format. This can include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">songs;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">paintings;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">books;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">scripts;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">literature;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tv broadcasts;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">websites; and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">computer programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not everything can be r<\/span>eceive <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">copyright<\/span> protection.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, <\/span>things that are excluded include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ideas<\/span>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">methods; and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">information that is not fixed in some type of media.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What Rights Does Copyright Provide to the Owner?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Copyright provides the person who holds it with the exclusive rights to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reproduce;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sell;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">distribute;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">adapt; and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">otherwise communicate the copyrighted
