This can be a commercial issue for businesses as fatigue reduces productivity and workplace satisfaction. M<\/span>ost importantly<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.nz\/employment\/too-many-sick-days\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">actual health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of your employees may be at risk. Under the law, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.nz\/employment\/penalties-health-safety-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you must take steps to watch out for the health and safety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of your employees at work.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a range of factors that can cause workplace fatigue. These include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lack of sleep, whether caused by work schedules and night shifts, or personal circumstances like having a young family;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">difficult or long hours of work, particularly when there are not sufficient breaks;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">disruption to sleep, so even if a person is having sufficient hours of sleep, there may not be enough quality sleep or rest;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">environmental conditions that disrupt an employee\u2019s rest or work, such as a cold working environment (working outside in a cold place in winter);<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">significant noise and handling vibrating tools can fatigue workers;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">physically demanding roles, such as in construction or other kinds of work that can physically exhaust employees<\/span>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mentally demanding roles, such as those that require extended periods of mental concentration;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">physical and mental work demands; and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">emotionally demanding work. Some work events can be emotionally tiring and increase fatigue, such as dealing with extremely upset or emotional people day in and day out.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How to Prevent Workplace Fatigue<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Health and safety law in New Zealand places an ongoing duty on businesses to look after their worker\u2019s health, including risks and challenges around fatigue. You should also engage with your workers when making decisions about how you will manage the risk of fatigue, as these measures will directly affect them. It is a great idea to discuss fatigue with your employees, as they may have a better idea than you as to what the causes of fatigue are in your workplace.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can take several measures with your employees to address workplace fatigue. Some of these include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ensuring workers are getting enough sleep and are not working shifts that are too long;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ensuring that workers take sufficient breaks and rest at work;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">checking how workers are getting to work and that they are getting to work safely. It is not always safe to drive after a long or exhausting shift;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">providing information about workplace fatigue and how workers can identify some of the warning signs and problems with fatigue;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">having a culture at work where workers can come forward with their issues around fatigue and other health and safety concerns;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">checking your employee\u2019s rosters and whether the hours they are working are reasonable; and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">varying the work that your employees are doing where possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to thinking about your employees specifically, you can also think about your workplace\u2019s physical and environmental conditions. Are the conditions conducive to effective and safe work? If the workplace is outside, is there adequate protection from the elements or contingency plans to not expose your workers to the worst weather conditions?
