For example, it includes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the M\u0101ori world view and perspectives; and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M\u0101ori creativity and cultural practices such as te reo, the M\u0101ori language.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are intellectual property protections to help ensure that businesses recognise and respect M\u0101ori culture and traditional knowledge, like m\u0101tauranga Maori. This allows businesses to benefit commercially while also preventing exploitation and inappropriate or offensive use. This article will explain how m\u0101tauranga M\u0101ori in intellectual property is assessed, to help your business respect this traditional knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Types of M\u0101ori Intellectual Property<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In New Zealand, the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iponz.govt.nz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(IPONZ)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> handles applications to <a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.nz\/intellectual-property\/intellectual-property-types\/\">register intellectual property<\/a> such as trade marks, patents or designs. For <\/span>instance, I<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PONZ assesses every application it receives for:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M\u0101ori elements; or<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">features derived from m\u0101tauranga M\u0101ori.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This means that even if you are unaware of M\u0101ori elements in your <a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.nz\/trademarks\/trade-mark-strategies-maori-businesses\/\">trade mark<\/a> or patent application, IPONZ can still pick them up. New Zealand law prevents registering a trade mark where its use or registration is likely to be considered offensive by a significant number of people, including M\u0101ori. There are two M\u0101ori advisory boards within IPONZ. These are the:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trade Marks M\u0101ori Advisory Committee; and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Patents M\u0101ori Advisory Committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"box box--icon box--info\">\n<p>These committees will assess your application if IPONZ determines that it contains m\u0101tauranga M\u0101ori.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What Can Be Considered M\u0101tauranga M\u0101ori?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When assessing for m\u0101tauranga M\u0101ori, IPONZ will look for any M\u0101ori element in your intellectual property. This can be any aspect of the intellectual property that reflects or derives from M\u0101ori culture.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, this could include elements such as:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a M\u0101ori word or design;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M\u0101ori traditional knowledge;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">indigenous plants or animals; or<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M\u0101ori music or dance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"box box--icon box--info\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The M\u0101ori element could be a major or minor part of the content, service or product. Regardless, IPONZ will assess it in the same way.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For instance, the most distinctive features of M\u0101ori imagery are:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">curvilinear designs (contained by or consisting of a curved line or lines) as depicted in moko (tattooing), kowhaiwhai (rafter patterns), and whakairo (carving);<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rectilinear designs (contained by, consisting of, or moving in a straight line or lines) as depicted in tukutuku (ornamental paneling) or taniko (embroidery); and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">designs incorporating M\u0101ori
