However, an essential factor to remember is your privacy obligations to consumers. Every consumer has privacy rights relating to using and managing their personal information. Your store may collect names, residential addresses and contact details for business purposes. This article will guide you through the steps on legally managing personal information and how to best comply with your privacy obligations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is Personal Information?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Personal information is data that can be utilised to identify an individual. This includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">names;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">residential addresses;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">email addresses;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">financial information; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IP addresses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New Zealand privacy duties will apply if your online store deals with or collects any of the above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Privacy Obligations\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the Privacy Act 2020, your store should appropriately collect, manage, and protect personal information appropriately. To this end, the Act contain 13 privacy principles to comply with. The principles state that your store should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">collect data for a lawful purpose;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">collect data from the individual concerned;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inform consumers why data is being collected;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">collect data in a lawful, fair and reasonable way;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prevent the loss, misuse or disclosure of personal data;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">allow consumers to access their data;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">allow consumers to correct their data;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ensure data is accurate and up-to-date;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">only retain data for as long as needed;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">only use data for the purposes it was collected for;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">only disclose for the purpose it was collected;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">only disclose information to those outside of New Zealand if they are subject to the Privacy Act 2020; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">only assign unique identifiers when necessary for business functions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To adequately protect personal information, you can implement the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight:
